Carport to Cinematic Wonderland – Audio Images Triumphs with "Drive-In Theater" in CEDIA's Best Home Cinema Award

In a remarkable fusion of innovation and technical mastery, Audio Images has once again showcased why they are the go-to experts for home cinema installations. Their “Best Home Cinema” award-winning project, "Drive-In Theater," is a testament to their ability to overcome architectural challenges and deliver a cinematic experience that exceeds expectations.

The project embarked on a journey to convert a seldom-used carport into a state-of-the-art home cinema for a luxury home builder private residence, nestled on a picturesque hill in Southern California. The initial idea of excavating beneath the living room soon pivoted to this ingenious carport transformation.

The "Drive-In Theater" project was anything but straightforward. The carport, initially housing a TV, outdoor toys storage, and mechanical equipment, required a complete overhaul. The challenge was to morph this space into a cinematic haven without compromising on the aesthetic appeal of the home. The client's quest for jaw-dropping sound and picture quality in this unconventional space led Audio Images to collaborate with PMI Engineering group, led by Anthony Grimani.

Through meticulous planning and multiple iterations, the team devised a layout that accommodated seating, speakers, screen, projector, modified doorways, ventilation systems, lighting scheme, and interior décor seamlessly. The collaborative effort with the client and Laura Brophy Interiors resulted in a room that went beyond expectations. The sound system, a 7.4.2 immersive audio package, was carefully orchestrated to meet exacting industry standards, featuring Grimani Systems active DSP speakers. The video system, centered around a 140” wide acoustically transparent screen and a Barco Loki projector boasting 5,500 lumens of output and 4k resolution, was nothing short of spectacular.

One of the unique challenges was the room's architectural design, featuring large arched glass panes on the majority of the side walls. Acoustical treatment was meticulously carried out using a specially lined drape system developed by PMI Engineering and supplied through MSR Acoustics, ensuring the room's acoustics were in harmony with CEB22 standards.

The power management system was designed with a three-pronged approach ensuring an isolated and dedicated electrical subpanel, a SurgeX UPS-1000-OL UPS for extra run time on mission-critical components, and a Wattbox WB-800-IPVM-12 for remote power cycle capabilities, ensuring a robust and reliable power backbone for the theater’s lighting and audio-video system.

Despite deviations from CEDIA Standards to accommodate the unique architectural features, the installation meticulously adhered to CEDIA RP22 standards wherever possible, ensuring an immersive audio experience that envelops the audience in a uniform “bubble of sound.”

The HVAC system was entirely re-engineered to keep noise levels below NC25, ensuring a comfortable and quiet environment conducive for a cinematic experience. The meticulous planning extended to ensuring proper ventilation, addressing the challenges posed by the room's structural elements.

The "Drive-In Theater" project is a shining example of Audio Images' — and the entire team’s — commitment to pushing the boundaries of what's possible in home cinema design, showcasing unparalleled expertise in overcoming architectural challenges to deliver a breathtaking cinematic experience. The client is, of course, ecstatic, enjoying movies, TV, and music in their new home theater oasis 2 to 3 nights a week.

This project not only won the accolades of the CEDIA judges but also the heart of the client, setting a new reference standard for a breathtaking cinematic experience, further cementing Audio Images' legacy in the home cinema industry.

With more CEDIA-certified personnel than any other provider within a 250-mile radius of their Southern California headquarters, and a growing tally of global CEDIA recognitions, Audio Images (Henry's Audio Visual Solutions, Inc.) continues to set the benchmark in the home cinema industry.
